What are mokopuna decisions?

Mokopuna or grandchildren decisions, refers to decisions that are made with the best interests of grandchildren, or descendants, in mind. It's a concept that emphasizes intergenerational well-being, where present-day choices are evaluated for their impact on future generations.

"Mokopuna priorities" means asking questions like:

  • "What will the consequences of this decision be for my grandchildren's generation?"

  • "Will this action help them thrive, or will it create problems they have to solve?"

  • "Are we protecting their opportunities and resources for the future?"

Community Spaces/ What Truly Matters

(1) Key priorities for resilient healthy water and stormwater management include:

  • Minimize pollution.

  • Manage stormwater flow and flood risk.

  • Protect public health and improve water quality at our beaches.

  • Utilize green infrastructure and integrated planning.

(2) Investing in the essential projects that:

  • restore and regenerate our natural habitats, dealing to erosion, invasive weeds and linking our tracks & bushwalks.

  • maintain and expand our infrastructure, while also strategically re-engaging with sustainable mobility to address our impact on our taiao, our environment.

(3) Step up our commitment to our community services, like libraries, play grounds, community spaces and recreation centres, which are crucial for bringing people together, encouraging public involvement, and strengthening social cohesion.

(4) Initiatives that truly matter. I'm dedicated to addressing critical community issues like loneliness, safety, and support for our vulnerable people like our kaumātua, elderly and our rangatahi, young people. Let's evaluate current efforts, ask better questions, and find solutions together.

Environment

I’m focused on protecting and restoring our natural spaces—preserving green and blue areas, improving water quality, and supporting biodiversity. I imagine a whenua alive with native trees, birds, and insects, where our whānau enjoy clean waters with confidence.

Housing

Everyone deserves safe, affordable, and quality housing. I support policies that grow supply and encourage diverse housing solutions, alongside a sensible, strategic approach that matches infrastructure development.

I believe in transparent, accessible local government. I’ll work to improve engagement and make sure everyone has a voice in shaping Ōrākei’s future. Having the right people at the table is crucial.

Recreation & Culture

I’m committed to community-led initiatives that reflect the voice of the community. Especially those that advocate for safer public spaces and better facilities like changing/ toilet utilities, community hubs, and parks. Ensuring our spaces are accessible, safe and enjoyable places to be.

I support a balanced transport system that meets the needs of our growing community. I’m not anti-car—many whānau and businesses rely on them—but I am pro-choice and pro-sustainability. I’ll advocate for better traffic flow, public transport, and safe options for walking and cycling. Designed, prioritised and costed for each unique area of our neighbourhood. Lets link them all up to make it effective and worthwhile.
